An ancient tradition dating back to when the church floors were covered in rushes. These rushes were renewed annually with all the village helping to gather the rushes, bring them to the church and lay them on the floor. Nowadays, the rushes are decorated with flowers or perhaps put onto Rush bearings and carried around the village by children and adults, accompanied by Burneside Brass Band. Following a short church service all participants are given a piece of gingerbread and all participating children are given a small picnic bag, then everyone sets off to the Rushbearing Sports, with childrens races for all age groups, including the Fell Race.

  • Folk in the Roundhouse: Anne-Marie Sanderson
Staveley Roundhouse Theatre is a converted gas holder in the village of Staveley, near Kendal. With a maximum of 50 seats we provide a truly intimate experience. Singer-songwriter Anne-Marie Sanderson's voice is evocative of birds in flight - soaring, gliding, swooping - and it finds its home among the tall trees of her deft guitar work. Describing Anne-Marie's distinctive indie-folk music in these terms is apt; she is an artist who casts a careful eye and attentive ear to the natural world, alternating between wide-eyed wonder and wry observation. "Her performance is seemingly effortless, underpinned by great technical skill and sensitive use of modern technology to wrap the listener in her meticulously crafted soundscapes." - Fatea Magazine Tickets: https://www.wegottickets.com/event/465337

Due to its popularity, Emma has expanded to a larger location, allowing 500 guests to enjoy the festival this year compared to 100 last year. WellFest takes place on Sunday 7th July, from 10am to 4pm, at Westmorland County Showground. General admission tickets cost £15, and guests can pre-book individual classes for £5.50 each. The event will also raise money for two charities - Mind and Motor Neurone Disease Association. • The Sixteen in Concert
The Sixteen make their eagerly awaited return to Carlisle Cathedral this summer. The choir and period instrument orchestra performs early English polyphony, works of the Renaissance, Baroque and early Classical music, and a mix of 20th-century music. Don't miss your chance to see them on this, their 40th anniversary tour of Cathedrals, bringing music back to the buildings for which it was written. The Sixteen's 2019 Choral Pilgrimage brings together music past and present, highlighting The Sixteen's choral journey over the last 40 years. Their close relationship with Sir James MacMillan continues with a new commission O virgo prudentissima, contrasted with music by Fayrfax performed on their very first recording, alongside music by Wylkynson and Sheppard. These fine examples of English polyphony are juxtaposed with stunning music by Tavener and Eric Whitacre in their 40th anniversary year.

  • Free Organ Recital: Alexander Ffinch
Carlisle Cathedral's series of free lunchtime recitals will host a special performance by organist Alexander Ffinch on Tuesday 30 July. Ffinch, who was brought up in the Cumbrian village of Newbiggin-on-Lune and attended Sedbergh School, went on to study at the Royal College of Music. His schedule for 2019 includes numerous engagements across the globe; in August he was scheduled to play the organ at Notre Dame Cathedral in Paris, but the tragic turn of events in April this year which saw the great building devastated by fire has closed that particular opportunity, for now. Carlisle Cathedral stepped in to offer an additional date to Alexander's summer schedule.

WellFest takes place on Sunday 7th July, from 10am to 4pm, at Westmorland County Showground. General admission tickets cost £15, and guests can pre-book individual classes for £5.50 each. The event will also raise money for two charities - Mind and Motor Neurone Disease Association. Their close relationship with Sir James MacMillan continues with a new commission O virgo prudentissima, contrasted with music by Fayrfax performed on their very first recording, alongside music by Wylkynson and Sheppard.
