    You are invited to join in Keswick Choral Society's 2019-2020 season. Both established works and new commissions by local composers feature in the coming months.   • Author Event Karen Babayan
    Join us for an afternoon with Karen Babayan, who will be talking about her 2019 book, Swallows and Armenians. Using newly-appraised correspondence and diaries as its basis, this collection of short stories, shows how a Cumbrian/Armenian family inspired the characters for the Walker family in Arthur Ransome's classic children's book, Swallows and Amazons. Karen Babayan was born in Iran to Armenian/British parents, moving to Leeds in November 1978 just prior to the Islamic Revolution of January 1979. She gained a PhD in Contemporary Art Practice from Leeds Beckett University and was awarded C-Art Cumbria Artist of the Year.

    Lasting Diaries - Barrow Library, Tuesday, Sept 10 from 9am. 9am to 12pm. BBC Radio Cumbria's Caroline Robertson will be broadcasting live from Barrow Library, celebrating 80 years of Nella Last, Barrow's 'Housewife 49'. 9am to 2pm. Pixel Portrait of Nella Last - come help us make a huge portrait of Barrow's famous wartime diarist out of 26,000 ration stamps! Like a giant paint-by-numbers, we'll be giving out ration card templates for everyone to build up the picture, adding small stickers done in the style of ration tokens. Stamp-by-stamp, from ham to jam, coffee to tea, with a communal effort together we'll build our mass participation portrait of Nella. 10am til they're gone - Dalton's Kooks Catering have baked some WW2 biscuit recipes for free nibbles at the event. Curl-up in the Listening Post armchair to listen to extracts from Nella Last's diary, recounting life in Barrow 80 years ago as WW2 begun on September 3, 1939. Performed by Barrow actress, Helen Newell.

  • Edward Taylor Organ Recital - Carlisle Cathedral
    Edward Taylor, Assistant Organist here at Carlisle Cathedral, gives a free lunchtime recital on Tuesday 10 September at 12.45pm. The programme, The Colours of the Organ, includes pieces specially chosen to reflect the variety of sounds and styles which the majestic Cathedral organ can produce, including works by JS Bach, Widor and Whitlock. Installed in 1856 and built by renowned organ-maker Henry Willis, the Cathedral's organ is played daily at services; to hear it at full throttle in such a magnificent setting is a truly memorable experience.

  • Acoustic Rave with The Showhawk Duo - Black Box Music Institute Carlisle
    The Showhawk Duo are bringing the acoustic rave to The Black Box Music Institute on Fisher Street, Carlisle with doors opening at 8pm. The young British guitarists Mikhail Asanovic and Jake Wright, together known as The Showhawk Duo, have dazzled audiences worldwide with their spectacular approach to playing the guitar. Their playing style has broken down barriers between acoustic and electronic music. Whether playing 90's trance anthems or modern funky house, their live show knows no boundaries and will leave you amazed!! Together, they started out as buskers and have since gone to play all over the globe.     The weekend of 28 and 29 September sees the return of the Green Door Art Trail. Art lovers are in for a treat when more than 50 artists in South Lakeland and North Lancashire open their doors to the public. There's an impressive array of original art on show, including ceramics, drawing, glass, mixed media, painting, photography, printmaking, textiles and wood - not forgetting those popular small and special treats, including jewellery and greetings cards. All venues are open on Sat 28 and Sun 29 September, and a number are also opening on Fri 27 September. Look out for timings in the catalogue as you plan your route.   • SpeakEasy : Freiraum - Borderlines Book Festival
    Freiraum (Spheres of Freedom) explored the question: 'What does freedom mean in present day Europe?' It was a creative project developed and managed by AWAZ Cumbria, working with Cumbria based artists and groups including SpeakEasy, and part of a wider project of the Goethe-Institut. This event includes performances by many of the Carlisle contributors. and local poets. Susan Cartwright-Smith is a writer, open water swimmer, costume maker, clog dancer, poet and fell walker. She has worked for a variety of theatres, including English National Opera, and Rosehill Theatre. She is a regular contributor to Tullie House evenings and has had work published by The Wildlife Trust, Forward Poetry and Caldew press. Philip Hewitson is a writer, poet, and film maker with a small production company, Tolivar Productions. He also hosts SpeakEasy open mic, has produced films for Carlisle Fringe festivals.

    Star of the BBC Radio 4 series, Natalie Haynes Stands Up for the Classics, Natalie brings her unique combination of ancient history and stand-up comedy to take you on a tour around the Trojan War, the setting for her latest novel A Thousand Ships. From the causes of the war to its complex aftermath, the stories of the women affected are largely untold but Natalie takes them out of the shadows and puts them where they belong - at the heart of the story. Natalie Haynes is a comedian, classicist, writer and broadcaster. She writes for the Guardian and is a regular contributor to BBC Radio 4 programmes including Natalie Haynes Stands Up for the Classics, now into its fifth series.     Join us for an afternoon with Karen Babayan, who will be talking about her 2019 book, Swallows and Armenians. Using newly-appraised correspondence and diaries as its basis, this collection of short stories, shows how a Cumbrian/Armenian family inspired the characters for the Walker family in Arthur Ransome's classic children's book, Swallows and Amazons. Karen Babayan was born in Iran to Armenian/British parents, moving to Leeds in November 1978 just prior to the Islamic Revolution of January 1979. She gained a PhD in Contemporary Art Practice from Leeds Beckett University and was awarded C-Art Cumbria Artist of the Year.

    The Showhawk Duo are bringing the acoustic rave to The Black Box Music Institute on Fisher Street, Carlisle with doors opening at 8pm. The young British guitarists Mikhail Asanovic and Jake Wright, together known as The Showhawk Duo, have dazzled audiences worldwide with their spectacular approach to playing the guitar. Their playing style has broken down barriers between acoustic and electronic music. Whether playing 90's trance anthems or modern funky house, their live show knows no boundaries and will leave you amazed!! Together, they started out as buskers and have since gone to play all over the globe. They have performed at most of the UK's large festivals including Glastonbury, Secret Garden Party, Kendal Calling, Electric Picnic and are one of the headline acts at this year's Beat Herder Festival.

Or perhaps you want to write your family history, or tell the story of a family member. This workshop will show you different ways of approaching life writing. Through simple writing exercises and the discussion of extracts we'll explore how to get going on your life story project. No experience needed, just a notebook and some enthusiasm.   • Green Door Art Trail 2019
    The weekend of 28 and 29 September sees the return of the Green Door Art Trail. Art lovers are in for a treat when more than 50 artists in South Lakeland and North Lancashire open their doors to the public. There's an impressive array of original art on show, including ceramics, drawing, glass, mixed media, painting, photography, printmaking, textiles and wood - not forgetting those popular small and special treats, including jewellery and greetings cards. All venues are open on Sat 28 and Sun 29 September, and a number are also opening on Fri 27 September. Look out for timings in the catalogue as you plan your route. Download a catalogue from www.greendoor.org.uk or pick one up from outlets around the area. Look out for the distinctive, colourful stripes on the cover. There's something for everyone. It's a great way to spend a day or the whole weekend on your own, with friends or as a family.

    Artist Maggie Learmonth is delighted to be returning to her native West Cumbria. She and Northumbrian artist Irene Godfrey present an exhibition of paintings and drawings arising from their personal response to differing experiences of West Cumbria. Not just a postcard explores how we see a landscape and how we record the experience of seeing it whether it's a direct visual representation of the topography, whether it's an abstraction of that or whether it's recording in some way the memory of experiencing the landscape. All are welcome to join the artists in conversation on Saturday 28th September at 12.30 Both artists are graduates of the Cass School of Art, London Metropolitan University, and have work in private collections nationally and internationally.   • SpeakEasy : Freiraum - Borderlines Book Festival
    Freiraum (Spheres of Freedom) explored the question: 'What does freedom mean in present day Europe?' It was a creative project developed and managed by AWAZ Cumbria, working with Cumbria based artists and groups including SpeakEasy, and part of a wider project of the Goethe-Institut. This event includes performances by many of the Carlisle contributors. and local poets. Susan Cartwright-Smith is a writer, open water swimmer, costume maker, clog dancer, poet and fell walker. She has worked for a variety of theatres, including English National Opera, and Rosehill Theatre. She is a regular contributor to Tullie House evenings and has had work published by The Wildlife Trust, Forward Poetry and Caldew press. Philip Hewitson is a writer, poet, and film maker with a small production company, Tolivar Productions. He also hosts SpeakEasy open mic, has produced films for Carlisle Fringe festivals.

    Star of the BBC Radio 4 series, Natalie Haynes Stands Up for the Classics, Natalie brings her unique combination of ancient history and stand-up comedy to take you on a tour around the Trojan War, the setting for her latest novel A Thousand Ships. From the causes of the war to its complex aftermath, the stories of the women affected are largely untold but Natalie takes them out of the shadows and puts them where they belong - at the heart of the story. Natalie Haynes is a comedian, classicist, writer and broadcaster. She writes for the Guardian and is a regular contributor to BBC Radio 4 programmes including Natalie Haynes Stands Up for the Classics, now into its fifth series. She is the author of five books: her most recent novel, A Thousand Ships, was published in May this year.
