Known affectionately as 'The Auld Grey Town', Kendal is a fine example of a small historic stone-built town and can be enjoyed simply for the engaging character of its streets and yards.
But what is the story of its stone? What is it like? How did it form? How old is it? When and how was it used? What else is there other than limestone?
This explanation of Kendal's building stones starts at the Parish Church, continues along Kirkland and Highgate and ends in the Market Place, a journey that spans at least 800 years of putting stone to good use, features at least 20 different types of stone and serves as an introduction to the marine wildlife of a third of a billion years ago.
