Cumbria Fire and Rescue Service - young firefighters

Young Firefighters projects have been running in Cumbria for a number of years. With the help of enthusiastic staff, both uniformed and support staff, the scheme has grown from its beginnings in Workington across the county.

The aims of the Young Firefighters Scheme is to encourage young people, especially those who are unlikely to achieve academically and may have social problems, to take part in a structured course to help them develop a range of skills. By undertaking fire and rescue service related activities such as:

  • Basic firefighting skills
  • Road traffic awareness training
  • First aid
  • Safety skills for life

These young people improve their skills in:

  • Physical and cognitive abilities
  • Teamwork and leadership skills
  • Self discipline
  • Communication skills and confidence
  • Health and safety awareness
  • First aid skills
  • General awareness of the community they live in.

The enthusiasm of the young people taking part is evident and their commitment to the programmes is demonstrated by the very low numbers who do not complete the course.

One student was asked which part did he like best - the reply was, 'It's all good'.
