The Branford Boase Award is awarded annually for an outstanding first novel for young people. The Henrietta Branford Writing Competition is an annual competition for young people which runs in conjunction with the prestigious Branford Boase Award and is open to anyone under the age of 19.
The CILIP Carnegie Greenaway Children's Book Awards - The Carnegie Medal is awarded annually to the writer of an outstanding book for children. The Kate Greenaway Medal is awarded annually for an outstanding book in terms of illustration for children and young people. Children and young people can shadow the judging process on the 'shadowing site'; they read, discuss and review the books on each shortlist and engage in reading related activity online.
Children's Book Award - The Children's Book Award is owned and coordinated by the charity the Federation of Children's Book Groups. Inaugurated in 1980, it is the only national award voted for solely by children from start to finish.
Costa Book Awards - one of the UK's most prestigious and popular literary prizes which recognises some of the most enjoyable books of the year by writers based in the UK and Ireland. It's unique for having five categories: First Novel, Novel, Biography, Poetry and Children's Book.
Cumbria Archive Service - Learning and Education - the Archive Centres in Barrow, Carlisle, Kendal and Whitehaven look after the documentary heritage of Cumbria from the middle ages to the present day and can provide support to schools through free tailor-made learning sessions and established workshops.
Cumbria County Council Community Learning and Skills - Family Learning - family learning courses are practical, fun and informative, aiming to encourage family members to learn new skills and improve parent's maths and English and enjoy quality time together.
Cumbria Libraries and Archives World War One web site - stories from around the county about local people, drawn from the collections of Cumbria's archives and libraries, are gathered on this dedicated World War One website. Cumbria Outdoors - with centres in areas of outstanding natural beauty, Cumbria Outdoors offers residential experiential learning, curriculum linked living history programmes, family learning, health and wellbeing and an environmental awareness course for all ages. Bookings can be tailored to suit everyone's budget and need.
English Association 4-11 Picture Book Awards - The English Association exists to further knowledge, understanding and enjoyment of the English language and literature and to contribute to the development of English studies. Established in 1995, the awards are presented to the best children's picture books of the year. The short list is normally announced in March.
International Children's Book Day - since 1967, on or around Hans Christian Andersen's birthday, 2 April, International Children's Book Day (ICBD) is celebrated to inspire a love of reading and to call attention to children's books. It is run by The International Board on Books for Young People (IBBY), a non-profit organization which represents an international network of people from all over the world who are committed to bringing books and children together.
International Literacy Day - for over 40 years now, UNESCO has been celebrating International Literacy Day by reminding the international community that literacy is a human right and the foundation of all learning.
Kids Lit Quiz - The Kids' Lit Quiz is an annual literature competition for children aged 10 to 13. It puts readers onto the stage and lets them compete for fantastic prizes.
National Literacy Trust - a national charity dedicated to raising literacy levels in the UK. Find information relating to schools, teaching and literacy, including news, research, events, policy and resources.
National Poetry Day - since 1994 National Poetry Day has engaged millions of people with poetry through a range of live events and web-based activities for people young and old throughout the country. Each year has a new theme. National Poetry Day is run by The Poetry Society which was founded in 1909 to promote "a more general recognition and appreciation of poetry". Since then it has grown into one of Britain's most dynamic arts organisations, representing British poetry both nationally and internationally. The Poetry Society also run a number of competitions including The Foyle Young Poets of the Year Award which is the biggest poetry competition for 11-17 year olds in the world.
National Share a Story Month - an annual celebration of the power of storytelling and story sharing. National Non-Fiction Day - a celebration of all things factual which takes place on the first Thursday in November each year. The day celebrates all those readers that have a passion for information and facts and attempts to bring non-fiction celebrations in line with those of fiction. Both celebrations are run by the Federation of Children's Book Groups which is a national voluntary self-funded organisation whose aim is to promote enjoyment and interest in children's books and reading.
National Story Telling Week - National Story Telling Week was conceived in the year 2000 to increase public awareness of the art, practice and value of oral story telling. It is held during the first week of February every year.
Reading Agency - reaching readers through UK-wide reading programmes delivered in partnership with 4200 UK libraries, schools, prisons, workplaces, publishers and the media. Programmes include the Summer Reading Challenge and Chatterbooks children's reading clubs.

Roald Dahl Day - the official Roald Dahl Day takes place every year on 13 September, the birthday of the World's No.1 storyteller.

Schools Library Association- committed to supporting everyone involved with school libraries, promoting high quality reading and learning opportunities for all.
Schools Library Association Information Book Award- The Information Book Award is an annual event and is a major development for information books, being designed to support school libraries and to reinforce the importance of non-fiction whilst highlighting the high standard of resources available. There are three categories and schools can vote on line for their favourite book between June and mid-September.
Stan Lee Excelsior Award- the only nationwide book award for graphic novels.
UK Literacy Association Book Awards-unique as they are the only national book awards judged entirely by teachers from both the Primary and Secondary sectors. The UKLA have a series of prestigious awards which celebrate achievements in literacy education in a range of areas.
Waterstones Children's Book Prize- The Waterstones Children's Book Prize champions new and emerging talent.
World Book Day- World Book Day is a celebration! It's a celebration of authors, illustrators, books and (most importantly) it's a celebration of reading. In fact, it's the biggest celebration of its kind, designated by UNESCO as a worldwide celebration of books and reading, and marked in over 100 countries all over the world.
