During the summer months, when there is a higher risk of wildfires, a specially equipped Unimog is also based at Appleby. The fire station covers approximately a seven mile radius from Appleby which includes a large farming community and is also divided by the very busy A66 trunk road. In addition to the usual domestic incidents, being a very rural location, many incidents are farming related fires involving barns and agricultural vehicles etc. Having the A66 run through the station area also results in a high percentage of turnouts to road traffic collisions.
