Appleby fire station is staffed by On-call Firefighters and houses one fire engine and a Wildfire Land Rover.

During the summer months, when there is a higher risk of wildfires, a specially equipped Unimog is also based at Appleby. The fire station covers approximately a seven mile radius from Appleby which includes a large farming community and is also divided by the very busy A66 trunk road. In addition to the usual domestic incidents, being a very rural location, many incidents are farming related fires involving barns and agricultural vehicles etc. Having the A66 run through the station area also results in a high percentage of turnouts to road traffic collisions.

Appleby has been established since medieval times, and is overlooked by Appleby Castle.  Appleby fire brigade was first established in 1879. The current, purpose built station is now situated in Holme Street.

The area contains:

  • 12 Grade I listed and 25 Grade II listed buildings

  • 8 Sites of Scientific Interest

  • An action plan is in place to manage additional risk resulting from Appleby Fair, an annual event which regularly attracts between 10,000 -12,000 gypsy travellers and up to 30,000 visitors in the first week of June

  • Appleby is at risk of flooding with undefended properties in the Sands being particularly vulnerable.  There are approximately 331 properties within the risk zone.

The table shows the number of incidents that have occurred within a nominal area assigned to the station (as shown on the map in the station profile).  This is different to the number of incidents attended by fire engines which are based at the station, as they may attend incidents outside their station area.
