Workington fire station is staffed by Regular and On-call Firefighters and houses two fire engines and the Joint Incident Command Unit (JICU). One of the fire engines is classed as an Enhanced Rescue Pump (ERP) and carries additional equipment to facilitate rescues involving large goods vehicles involved in Road Traffic Collisions, as well as a boat for water rescues from inland water ways. This vehicle also carries other associated rescue equipment for the release of large animals.
The Joint Incident Command Unit is a mobile incident management vehicle which can be staffed by members of the Fire Service, Police or Ambulance Service.
One of the main risks in the town is the number of industrial factories which include Chemical plants and Manufacturing units. The busy A595 and A596 trunk road passes through the station area which can lead to problems with Road Traffic Collisions. Other risks associated with in the town and station area include schools, several residential homes for elderly people and residential properties. Firefighters receive specialist Swift Water Rescue training to deal with water rescue and flooding incidents along with specialist Road Traffic Collision training.

The coastal town of Workington is situated on the west coast of Cumbria and is largely an industrial town with a population of around 25,000. The main industries in the town include the production of carton board (Iggesund Paperboard), Chemical Plants, and many other
industrial factories and units.
Workington Fire Station is situated on Moorclose Road and was built in 2013 as part of the North West Fire Services PFI Initiative.

Lostrigg Beck often causes flooding to communities in the Bridgefoot area and Workington was affected by the severe flooding to the County in 2009.
