Nightstop (Emergency Accommodation)

Nightstop North East and Cumbria works to provide emergency accommodation for people who are in immediate housing crisis.  The project works with homeless and vulnerable people over the age of 16 and provides overnight accommodation in the homes of volunteer 'hosts' who will provide a clean and safe environment along with an evening meal, breakfast and a 'listening ear' if required.

The Depaul website gives more details of what the service provides.

Nightstop Cumbria website.

1. Contact Nightstop North East and Cumbria on the appropriate regional telephone number shown below to discuss whether your referral is appropriate for the project.  The Nightstop team is available from 9am - 4pm, Monday to Friday.  Unfortunately they are unable to take any referrals outside these hours at present.

2. If appropriate they will ask you to complete a referral form for that person or you can use the First Contact Script (if you have already completed that with the young person) to refer the young person.  It is critical that you have the young person's permission before this referral is submitted - without this, Nightstop will be unable to progress the referral.  If they think the person is not suitable for the project they will offer advice and guidance on alternative accommodation options.

3. Should Nightstop North East and Cumbria have no vacancies with hosts at the time you telephone the project, they will advise you immediately.  Once again they will discuss alternative accommodation options with you.

4. Where they receive a completed referral form, they will liaise with yourself and the client whilst making all the necessary enquiries to assess the person's suitability for Nightstop accommodation.  Once completed they will inform you of whether they are able to offer the person emergency accommodation.

5. If they are unable to offer the person accommodation, they will explain fully the reasons for their decision and again, offer advice and guidance regarding alternative accommodation options.

6. If the person is to be accommodated by Nightstop North East and Cumbria they will talk to you about the next stage in the process i.e. to arrange for them to access the host accommodation.

7. The person or their key worker needs to contact Nightstop North East and Cumbria on a daily basis to discuss whether further accommodation is needed for that evening.  They will give priority to placing those people who were accommodated the night before.  However, if they do not hear from the person or their worker before 12 noon, they will no longer have priority over any new referrals to the service.

They do not usually meet with the person until after the referral has been processed and approved so they rely on the referral agencies to provide as much information as possible to support the application and assess the person's suitability for accommodation in the home of one of their volunteer hosts.  Volunteer host profiles  - can be shared with young people.

Nightstop provides accommodation on a 'night by night' basis with a 7 to 10 night limit on accommodation, though in exceptional circumstances this may be extended.  After the initial referral they will determine how many nights the person will need accommodation by having contact with them and/or their key worker on a daily basis to address continuing need for the service.

The service user is expected to engage with support offered by Nightstop and other agencies to address their longer term housing situation as Nightstop is an emergency accommodation project only.
