Care Services Westmorland and Furness offer a range of Day Services in a warm and welcoming environment. Activities are designed to support people to maintain their independence for as long as possible, helping people to remain at home for longer. Staff support meaningful, personalised and engaging activities and by meeting with others the support helps to reduce loneliness and social isolation. 

Friendly and safe specialised support is available for those living with dementia, with opportunities to be involved in stimulating and therapeutic activities provided by experienced staff. 

Our staff are professionally trained and passionate about what they do. Staff approach their roles with creativity to ensure the varied activities meet the needs of people attending and promote their wellbeing.

Our day care services improve quality of life for individuals attending through building new friendships and by giving the opportunity for people to get extra support with some daily tasks such assisted bathing and hairdressing. Nutritious hot meals are provided and snacks are available throughout the day.

Day services for adults with a physical and/or learning disability

Care Services Westmorland and Furness have a diverse range of Day Services for adults with a physical and/or learning disability. The support offered is highly personalised to meet the needs of the individual and promote and maintain independence. 

We encourage everyone to access facilities and activities in the local area wherever possible and provide the support to access those services so that individuals are truly integrated into their local community. Staff also lead workshops to support individuals with independence skills and support other activities based on the interests and wishes of individuals attending. Our staff team are highly experienced and well trained and provide dignified, professional and friendly support. 

Specialised and therapeutic activities are available in some centres to meet the complex needs of our service users. 

Opportunities are available for individuals to gain work-based skills, with a variety of placements available including woodwork skills, customer service and various crafts.

Mill Lane Day Opportunities is comprised of separate day opportunity venues located throughout the town of Barrow in Furness.


The Mill Lane Centre

A purpose built day opportunity venue with extensive modern facilities designed to meet the needs of people with profound and multiple Learning Disability and or complex physical needs. Support is person centred enabling people to access a diverse range of activities, opportunities and experiences.

Chatsworth Crafts

Craft, Woodwork and Pottery are some of the activities available on offer within this part of the Service. There is a focus on skills development and for those who wish, the opportunity to develop employee skills to enable access to mainstream employment.

Open Tuesday, Thursday and Friday the Service offers a warm welcome to Older People seeking friendship, companionship and support. A two course meal is available each day alongside a range of enjoyable and stimulating activities.


Kendal Day Services

Horticare

Horticare is a community-based day service for adults with learning disabilities. We use social and therapeutic horticulture to provide service users with therapy, education, and personal development.

Through their placements service users can develop competence, respect, dignity, responsibility, independence and become more socially included within the local community.

Service users are involved in a range of activities including: 

  • Community and amenity landscape maintenance which includes: Lawn care, Pruning/weeding/planting up, Landscape maintenance and enhancement, Garden design
  • Plant nursery production: Raising plants from seed, cuttings and division, Greenhouse skills, Recycling/composting, Planting hanging baskets and containers
  • Activities: Special interest courses, Educational courses, Life skills such as cookery, Wildlife support such as making bird and bat boxes and bug hotels, External community projects.
  • Information Technology: Basic computer skills
  • Health and Safety: Manual handling, Correct use of machine tools / hand tools 
  • Social and leisure: Social and Educational outing

Horticare is open year-round for plant sales to the public and available to carry out garden maintenance work for businesses or community groups.


Windmill

Windmill provides a person-centred service for adults with profound and multiple learning disabilities. 

The team are trained in the skills and knowledge required to ensure a high standards of specialist care. The service enhances lives and promotes physical and psychological wellbeing to the service users through meaningful community and social participation. 

The service encourages effective communication tailored to the individual's needs. Physical development plans are used to encourage and support service users, using exercise plans, ceiling track hoists. The team have close relations with occupational therapist, speech and language therapist, the community learning disability team, and other professionals to ensure equality and a person-centred care package is provided.

Windmill prides itself on everyone having an enjoyable time throughout their day, whether it's having days out or joining in a variety of activities. Working with families and their carer's, giving respite at times, whilst providing a holistic approach to ensure the service users' needs are met.  


W.O.S.P - Wider opportunities for social participation

W.O.S.P is a community-based day service for adults with learning disabilities. We offer Individual support to enable choice and develop new skills and an opportunity to engage in the community and community projects.

We work in partnership with charities to enable inclusion and present opportunities to broader their range of experiences as well as educational development, some of the activities include Sailing, art and computer courses, wood bending and musical development. 

We have attended Kendal calling and had trips to local businesses to enhance our knowledge. We attend the County show as well as going on trips to our twin town in Germany.

Staff put the service users at the heart of what they do encouraging meaningful activities as well as relationships. W.O.S.P contribute to the local community working with businesses which gives them a sense of value and self-worth.

Through their placements service users can develop competence, respect, dignity, responsibility, self-esteem, positivity, and independence through social inclusion


Whinfell

Whinfell is a community-based day service in the heart of Kendal for adults with learning disabilities.  

We are an experienced staff team and work with service users to provide them with person centred experiences and learning opportunities to enable their personal growth and development and promote their health and wellbeing. 

The centre offers:

  • An art space where service users can express themselves and be creative, explore sensory experiences and take part in community projects. 
  • Training kitchen, where service users are supported to plan and cook meals. 
  • Rebound therapy and exercise sessions to promote physical well-being. 
  • Outdoor activities, including walking, cycling, and sailing groups, where people can enjoy the mental and physical benefit of the great outdoors.
  • Support to access facilities in the local community including visiting attractions, public transport, shops, pubs and cafes, theatre, and cinema to meet their needs and interests.

Daybreak offers a range of daytime opportunities and support to people with severe, long, and enduring mental ill health. 

The purpose of Daybreak is to provide peer group support, social interaction, practical help and guidance, and functional activities. This takes place in a friendly and gentle environment and utilises the users individualised target and task centred support planning programme.

Users value the facility as:

  • somewhere that provides friendship, and support from peers.
  • a place which increases self-confidence
  • somewhere to give structure to the week
  • a place where you can have conversations and a bit of fun
  • offers activities like swimming, snooker, walking, picnics, quizzes, crafts, bus trips to other towns, Christmas shopping, county show 
  • somewhere where you can get help and advice from support staff

Kendal Older Adults Day Service offers an opportunity for service user to attend a warm and welcoming centre designed to provide personalised care and support tailored to individual users'
