Books fire the imagination....reading for pleasure ensures lifelong literacy skills...

Our Book Buses come to your door to:

  • deliver brilliant new titles to excite all our readers
  • encourage reading for pleasure
  • enable pupils to experience a unique library environment

Choose from 3000 books including fiction, picture books, easy reads, non-fiction - suitable for all reading levels and interests.

Each year children from schools across Cumbria visit our Book Buses to choose around 70,000 books to read.

We look forward to seeing you soon on the Book Bus! We hope the following tips will help make our visit to you the best it can be.

Before the visit:

We will:

  • Let you know in advance when the visit will be
  • Contact you just before the visit as a reminder

Please can you:

  • Ask a member of staff to coordinate the visit and devise a timetable to maximise time spent on the bus
  • Make sure enough space is allocated outside school to accommodate the bus
  • Let us know in advance if you need to cancel the visit and we will do our best to rearrange it.

During the visit:

We will:

  • Be happy to answer any questions and provide any guidance you and your pupils need
  • Exchange all or part of your allocation, you can renew any titles you want to or choose a completely new collection
  • Share a storytelling session with your children on request

Please can you:

  • Encourage the children to choose whichever book they want.  This will enhance their visit and their reading experience
  • Share the experience with the children, browse with them and talk to them about their choice

After the visit:

  • Enjoy your books!

See you soon!

"...we had the school library van this week and the staff who went aboard all commented on how helpful and lovely the librarian was. Many thanks for all you are doing to encourage reading in schools." St Bridget's CE School, Brigham

"Thank you for bringing many, many different worlds into our playground this week" Grasmere CE School via Twitter

Is the library van actually a Tardis? Certainly these children have disappeared into different worlds... and every class comes out of the van with different "treasure", heaps of it." Grasmere CE School via Twitter

"It was fabulous as always!"

"Our children loved visiting the library bus as always. It's a wonderful service."

"Just a quick note to thank you and all the mobile library staff for their continuing work which is enabling all our children to love books and reading; our school is one for pupils with severe and profound learning needs and the service provides all of them with the opportunity to explore a library in a way that is hugely meaningful for them. In particular the staff look to provide books on subjects that pupils are interested in and most importantly they remember individual pupils and what they are individually interested in too. The service and all the staff are making not only a difference to reading but also to the joy and happiness encountered through reading for all our pupils - Thanks again." Kris Williams, James Rennie School

"Can I also send huge thanks to the library assistant who visited us recently with the library van. The children had a brilliant morning and loved sharing his recommendations."

"..the children loved it!...They are all really excited to read the books they have chosen."

"There was a big cheer when the library van visit was announced in assembly."
